I would bet that his diabetes is not being controlled very well by your description of him. He needs to see his doctor and see if his meds need to be changed or adjusted first. Then make sure that he is eating a healthy low carb diet that is rich in protein and fiber. Make sure he has some carbs, but make sure they are good carbs. He needs to get out of the bed and get some exercise every day. There are plenty of good foods that he can eat. Get him a dietitian or a nutritionist to help with his meals. He sounds like he is going to need a lot of help. The first thing he needs to do is get his butt to the doctor.
The thing to do is to get him moving. He needs to walk at least 45 minutes a day. For diet, think green. Broccoli, spinach, cabbage, kale, salads. Add skinless broiled chicken or fish for protein. Turkey is also good. For bread, stick with brown. Avoid the white foods (white bread, potatoes). Take it easy. You will get through this.
He sounds like he is also depressed.
Balanced meals like chicken (no skin), vegetable, whole grain bread. No sugar.
