What is the longest a fever can last in children?
My 9 year old son has been running a fever for almost 4 days now. He’s been on antibiotic for 3 full days but still has temperature unless I give him a fever reducer. They say that you shouldn’t give a fever reducer unless the temperature reaches above 102 (he’s been getting 101 and 102). I am getting more and more concerned that the antibiotic is not working and it may be something more serious. It’s been 72 hours and to my experiece, antibiotics usually take effect after 42 hours, tops, where there is no fever. Does anyone know how long a fever can go on for and if I should be concerned and take him in for another visit?

Antibiotics can take up to 7 days to work. Don’t be afraid to give him a fever reducer (over the counter kind), for goodness sake, the poor kids is suffering!
Yes take his back to the Doc. ASAP! Maybe get a second opinion.
Call your Ped. first thing when their office opens tomorrow. There must be a reason why your little guy still has a temp. Good luck. Hope he gets better soon.
Take him back to your doctor because a) the antibiotic may not be working against this infection. 2 ) it maybe a virus.
3 Not to alarm you but the fever can last as long as the illness is present. LOTS OF FLUIDS
4) He maybe dehydrating.
Take him in for another visit. Sometimes, antibiotics are ineffective and you should switch to a different one. Alternate between advil and tylenol fever reducers; that might work better. Go to the docor first and get a different antibiotic. He’ll be ok.
unfortunately until death occurs.
if it is a bacterial infection . your child may need a different type of antibiotic. until then use the old fashioned treatments to bring down the fever . a cool bath. a change of diet that will change his or her ph level such as cold lemonade .Alchoal baths also help. get the child back into the doctors asp as there is more wrong than the doctor first thought. like appendicitis or ulcer.
Make sure that you are properly hydrateing your child . dehydration with a fever is very dangerious.
