What is the best way to administer liquid medicine to my cat?
My cat is very sick and the vet put him on 2 different liquid medicines (orally). He is lethargic and I know he will refuse to let me put this medicine in his mouth. How can I make him comfortable while doing this and get it down him at the same time? Thanks! Troll answers WILL be reported!
I have several syringes.
He is currently not eating or drinking.

This is how I do it. I put the liquid in a syringe. Get the syringe and a towel ready in a room so the cat cannot escape or go under a bed. I wait till the cat is asleep. Pick up the cat and go to the room. Be sure to close the door. I get on the floor and wrap the cat in the towel and put the cat between my legs. Then gently start syringing the liquid in the SIDE of the mouth little by little until he/she gets it all. Not too quickly so the liquid will get in the lungs. That’s that. Done. Then, I let the cat go and she or he runs like hell:)
Good luck!
Did the medicine come with a syringe? If not, you should ask your vet for one because it makes giving medicine a lot easier.
A method I used for my cat when she was sick was I wrapped her up in a clean towel and held her in my arms like a baby. Then someone else like my sister or mom slowly tried to open her mouth and as soon as there was a little crack open she used the syringe to get the medicine in her mouth.
2 suggested ways:
1. wrap him in a towel, and pat him, to calm him down. the towel usually helps to stop them from moving. open his mouth by pressing your thumb on one side of his mouth, and your pointer finger on the other side. do this step quickly: use a seringe, and suirt the medicine to the back of his throat. quickly close his mouth, hold it shut with on hand (do not cover his nose, otherwise he wont be able to breathe) gently stroke his throat ( this helps make him swollow the medicine, and will also calm him.) when your sure hes swallowed it, unwrap the towel and let him go.
2. you could mix it into wet cat food. When my cat has to take tablets i hide them in cheese, and he happily eats them. the problems with this, is that he may not eat all the food meaning he wont get the full dose of medicine. ***ALWAYS ask your vet if this medicine still works if you mix it in with food***
Oy, medicating cats. Not a fun prospect in the slightest.
I strongly suggest either wrapping him in a towel (tightly enough that he cannot escape, but not so tight that it causes breathing issues) in order to restrain him, or… Well, learn how to corral the cat, open his mouth, and get a squirt in quickly while trying to prevent his escape AND hold the mouth open. (After that, I’d hold his mouth shut briefly, to be sure he swallows it, and be sure to reassure him afterward.)
Good luck. You’re going to need it.
