This question is for people who have family members, or more specifically children, who have autism. My first child was diagnosed at 2 and I recently had another child (10 days old). I want to get more insight from parents about how they feel about vaccines in regards to autism and whether or not we should put the vaccines shots on hold for younger siblings until they get older.

I’m almost 17, and lately I’ve become extremely interested in autism, and helping autistic children and their families. One thing I’d like to do is get to know autistic children and adults personally, and maybe even offer baby-sitting for autistic children in my area (but I’m not sure if the parents would be comfortable). Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can become more active about autism? If you have an autistic child, do you think a babysitter who has patience for autistic children would be a relief?

This question is for parents of children with autism and autism professionals. I am looking to provide a really good sensory diet for my 3-year-old daughter, who has autism. Therapy catalogs are full of pricey products. Which ones have you found to be the best?

Would you be interested in finding if there is a relationship between paternal age and autism currently in the US? What specific questions do you want answered? Do you want pre-natal testing worked on?
Dear SpecEdtch,
. We need to get the data. You know how horrible the situation is for these kids and yet people keep ignoring the father’s age issue. It is not fair to to be so cavalier about the risks of later fathering because the parents are not the ones who have such agonizing lives. We now know that sperm mutate. If guys want to become fathers late I think they should banks their semen in their 20s. I hope you speak out, because you know a lot about the realities. I wish you the best in your work.
Maybe you could write a book about your experience because someone has to tell it like it is. It is not to make anyone feel guilty but to make people aware of reality.
Dear basketcase
Thank you, it is very exciting. In a 1980 study of autism in Sweden 34 was the mean age of the fathers and at that time this mean age was much older than the fathers is the non -affected group. I hope a lot of money goes to programs to help these kids as they grow up. But we may need to re-think what is an older father. Certainly 32 seems quite young now-a days. Alex

I know radiation and chemotherapy are mainly for cancer but what is dialysis for? I’m curious to know the difference. Both my parents (in their 70s now) have battled cancer and have gone through radiation but no chemo (thankfully). I have no clue what they do in radiation or chemotherapy and want to know.

I am going on a flight for 11 hours going and 13 hours coming back. I really want to sleep on the plane so I was thinking about taking some medicine to make me go to sleep. I here taking Benadryl just for sleeping is bad due to the side effects. Also my parents are kind of nervous giving me any type of sleeping medicine, so what are the side effects of the drugs. Also how long does it take for the medicine to go in effect.

We’re married and her parents don’t know. My insurance doesn’t cover her treatment but her parents’ insurance plan for her will. Is it illegal to have health insurance for 1 person from 2 companies? And will her parents find out that she’s married with insurance if she uses their health insurance plan?

Both my parents have Medicare and Tricare and are still paying for co pays. Just found out at my local Pharmacy that the insurance should have been covering all of these co pays for years. My parents have been retired for about 9 years. The have been paying for labs, doctors, and medication co pays all this time. Who can they go to to retrieve their money back. They have all their receipts and taxes to prove what they have paid all these years. Can anybody help?

My parents are in their early 50′s, and do not have health insurance. They are struggling with money, so paying for health insurance is the last thing on their minds.
Can I purchase health insurance for them? I have never purchased insurance before (I have always received it through employers).
Some facts:
› We live in NJ
› They own their own small business
› They are NOT my dependents
› They are in good shape – no pre-existing medical problems
Any advice or point in the right direction is appreciated!

I’m about to apply medical school and am almost done with an MS in BME. I really want to be a doctor, but have always been interested in medical investments also. My parents do not want me to be and never have encouraged me to be a doctor even though I enjoy it and have good grades. I am planning on ignoring there wishes, and pursuing medicine, but am also interested in maybe trying to find a consulting job or working during studies, and maybe medical investing down the line.
