People sometimes experience a reduction in libido while dieting and while it is not properly understood why most theories rely on the obvious hormonal hypothesis.
All sex hormones are synthesised from cholesterol which can only be obtained from the diet. Seeing as the body has no way of storing cholesterol (the plaques in your arteries don’t count!) A person needs an adequate nutritional intake of healthy fats to ensure they have enough cholesterol to synthesise sex hormones.
Logically it follows that on very low fat diets people may not receive enough cholesterol to properly synthesise sex hormones and consequently experience a reduction of libido. There are no studies I am aware of to prove this hypothesis and no significant scientific interest in finding the exact cause of apparent reduction of libido in some dieters so this theory remains speculative though well founded.
If you are determined to turn up your nose to mainstream nutritional advise to pursue a balanced diet with a healthy assortment of carbohydrates, protein as well as healthy fats then you could try a very low fat diet if you are determined to destroy your own libido.
Over the short term this is unlikely to be a problem. However over the long term this would likely prove quite unhealthy. Many essential vitamins are fat soluble meaning you can’t receive an adequate dietary intake unless you have a healthy amount of fat in your diet, proving a serious health concern over the long term.
Hormones also tend to maintain a balance in the body which tends to be quite robust and elastic during the short term but can become sluggish over the long term. This means supposing your sex hormones did fundamentally shift balance, upon resuming a normal healthy diet they may take longer than you expect to return to normal or worst case scenario not return at all! The obvious implications of this are if your lifestyle changes you may face a great deal of frustration in efforts to return a healthy libido.
Lastly sex hormones have a subtle affect upon body composition. People with a healthy balance of sex hormones tend to have a more masculine or feminine appearance due to hormone related patterns of body fat distribution and the relationship between hormones and musculature. A chronic deficiency of sex hormones could affect your appearance in subtle ways such as a body shape less typical for somebody of your own gender and reduced muscle tone. Again I stress this would only be the case over the long term.
In summary I advise you don’t pursue a very low fat diet explicitly for the purposes of reducing libido because it falls outside the dietary recommendations of health authorities for a number of reasons. Very low fat diets are unlikely to pose any significant harm in the short term but over the long term there are foreseeable risks.
Well if you lose too much weight and get underweight, that also causes a loss of intreest in sex. Also, there are certain foods that help decrease it – Google it.
