i always get a crazy knot under my shoulder blade. i use a tennis ball and stand against a wall with the ball between me and the wall and roll it around. this may work for your neck as well.
also, with most all other massage, always massage toward the heart.
get an electric one

Yeah, i do massage my neck softly and carefully.
This works better when lying down on your back- bring both hands to the back of your neck with finger tips on either side of your spine. Pull/lift slowly. Work your way up from the base of your shoulders to the base of your skull.
You can also place a small towel/wash cloth rolled up and placed at the base of your skull while lying on the floor- it will help relax your neck muscles. To get shoulder muscles you can place two tennis balls in a tube sock. Again lie back and move the balls so they are under any tense spots making sure to avoid the spine. (Never place direct pressure on the spine.)
Other things you can do is use a hot pack or hot shower (unless you did something to injure your neck in which case use cold for the first 48 hours) to help loosen up muscles. Alternate this with neck rotations and stretching.
Just rub it i guess? My dad asks me to step on his body. Apparently thats a good massage?

to massage your own neck you take ur hand and you bring it around to your neck and clasp it (as hard as you would like) and then you just start to rub it like back and forth or side to side,etc.. You can also just use your whole hard to pinch it and release and continue to do this (it will relieve tension after a while). As for giving your husband a message you take your hands and you use ur palms (for like deep tissue- relieves more tension), or your thumbs (to get into certain places), and rub it circles, side to side, etc.. Also you can claps your hands together as it pinching fingers to palm across his back.
Use one hand at a time crossing over your chest and grabbing on your neck and shoulder muscle. Press down and shake at the same area for some time. And going to a massage hot tubs is good and inexpensive way to get loosen up..
