check your insurance Rx coverage and see which meter they support. Most of them have a favorite they will pay 100% for the test strips. Then see the doctor to get new Rx for meter and test strips and other testing supplies.
Dream on if you think anyone can get free strips for the meter they think is great!! You have to go with the one your insurance thinks is great!!
About the most you can get free is ten strips with a new meter. Currently Walgreen’s in the States offers one that you can claim once. The Canadian Diabetes Association is offering 300 test strips and a meter for free to qualified individuals.
Aside from that you need to see what your insurance company will pay for.
If you must pay for your own, I hear that the Walmart Relion meter has inexpensive strips and their meter looks remarkably like the Precision Xtra meter ( which can measure ketones but the Relion can’t ). People have reported the Relion meter as being consistently off, so you want to check at least once with another meter to see what the offset is but Consumer’s Reports says it’s accurate ( they used a lab which will of course only say if a meter is accurate to +/- 15 mg/dl ( +/- 1 mmol/L ). Another low cost alternative is urine test strips, you should use disposable cups if you use them as the cup has to be really clean far more than washed cups are and they only really pick up glucose levels of 200 mg/dl or more but they are what diabetics used before glucose meters and are often enough to keep diabetes under control.
