Do antibiotics pass through breastmilk to affect baby’s stomach? Probiotics?

I took some antibiotics (azithromycin - sp?) a few weeks ago and now my son, who is nursed, has VERY loose stools. Could the antibiotics I took have passed through the breastmilk and affected him? maybe probiotics would help him? He’s had loose stools for a couple of weeks now… I asked his doctor, and he didn’t seem concerned, but its loose enough to come out the sides of his diapers, which is very annoying.

Antibiotics do pass through breast milk. My son and I both became lactose intolerant because of the antibiotics I took. I was on several for 9 weeks for a persistent infection in my c-section incision. The good news is that, yes, probiotics work. They pass into your breastmilk, too, but I also gave my baby some directly into his mouth. You can buy liquid probiotcs but I could never find any so I bought them in capsule form and opened the capsules and mixed the powder with water. I just read in BabyTalk about a woman who put something called Baby’s Jarro-Dophilus on her nipples before nursing and her son’s gas and explosive green poop disappeared in 24 hours. It’s worth a shot!
i am assuming your antibiotics were prescribed to you by a doctor who knows you are nursing. i would not give your baby any drugs not prescribed to him. if it was a few weeks ago i doubt it is the antibiotics affecting him. is he teething? my son had loose stool when teething - actually diarrhea. take your son to a different doctor if you do not like the opinion given by this doctor.
I swear by probiotics- they work wonders. Since antibiotics kill the good bacteria in your digestive system they really help put the good bacteria back. How old is your baby? My doctor never had a problem with our little guy taking them- he actually thought it was great. If the baby is only nursing it may be hard to get him to eat it. Unless he is on cereal that it will be easy to mix in. I’m sure that the loose stool is a result from your antibiotic. Best of luck!
