Yes, this is normal. Try to eat more foods high in fiber like green leafy vegetables, apples, raisins, bran cereal, etc. You should definitely get some type of stool softener like Colace to take until you become regular again. Miralax is sold over the counter now and is really good because it’s not really a laxative, what it does is it puts moisture back into your intestines and that regulates you. You mix it in 8 oz of water or juice and the good thing is you can’t taste it!!! But don’t take the colace and Miralax together though.
Ideally, the removal of the gall bladder would not produce constipation. This is because the gall bladder only functions similar to the urinary bladder, a storage area, which in this case is for bile. Bile is responsible for the breakdown of the fatty components of what we eat. Thus, it wouldn’t lead to constipation.
On the other hand, other complications such as uninhibited release of bile from the liver would also not produce constipation since the time it takes for the food to circulate in the intestines allows enough time for the body to correct this enzyme imbalance on its own.
For the constipation, it could predominantly be affected by your diet. =D
Actually it was the opposite for me.
You know the gallbladder holds on to bile the liver makes and then drips it out to help digestion of fats. With it gone the bile just drips into the intestines whenever.
That can cause diarrhea or constipation. In most cases it cause IBS like symptoms which alternates between the two.
Most of the time docs prescribe a fiber that sequesters the bile in your intestine so it goes out the normal way and does not irritate you colon.
I have found that eating a lot of fiber foods, beans and vegetables, supplemented by psyllium (Metamucil) powder and inulin (Benifiber) along with kefir or live culture yogurt have helped me be normal.
