Anyone have any home remedies for getting rid of head lice?
My children were exposed to head lice around 4th of July and i have been checking them aleast 2 times a day since I found out. Well any when checking my daughter last night I found lice eggs. So I ran to wal-Mart and bought bedding spray, and a product called licefreee! a homepathic Pediculicid it is pharmacist recommend kills lice and the eggs and most important is free from potentially harmful pesticides and is safe for repeated applications.(Non-toxic). I am washing everything in hot water and drying it at a hot temp. also I sprayed everything with the bedding spray. I’m sure that I’ve done a very good job and I also made sure my children didn’t have anymore eggs/nits or bugs i comb it w/a nit comb throughly. I’m just needing serious suggestion on any home remedies that you might of heard that worked or tried yourself in case they ever return. also if you have any suggestions on how/or what to use to keep from getting them. Thanks alot ahead of time. This is very frustrating

There are a few listed at the link below (mayonnaise, white vinegar, Tea tree oil mixed with "Dawn" diswashing liquid, etc.). I have never used any of these myself, so good luck!
I heard mayonnaise but it sounds gross.
Wash their hair every day with a good shampoo. And the bedding at least 3 times a week for a while. That should help quite a bit. But kids being kids, they will be exposed to head lice again at school and other things. Expect it and keep the Pediculicid handy. I think it is the best stuff on the market for head lice today.
The best thing you need to get rid of eggs is a metal tooth comb. Those plastic ones don’t work. I don’t remember where to find them but I am sure you can find them online. The are metal & the teeth are really close together. They work excellently to get rid of eggs. But you have to come evryone out, or they will keep coming back. No shampoo I have found has ever work at getting rid of eggs. You Have To sit There & Comb ‘em out. But BELIEVE ME It Is Worth IT!
Oh,it’s awful, isn’t it?I’ve never used anything but Nix-and then,I overused it,I’m surprised my son had any hair left.I have heard of using petroleum jelly on babies because you can’t use the chemical stuff on them, but I don’t know how well it works and it would be a terrible mess to get out. It’s supposed to smother the lice, but it would take weeks to get it out.Vacuuming is better than any of those sprays. You just need to re-treat their heads after two weeks,I think.I really feel for you. It’s just a nightmare.
lots and lots of conditioner and a good nite comb and comb out conditioner for a least 30 min its a job that has be done now a days at least 3 times a week also use a repelent spray with tea tree oil that helps a lot to, it does get better when kids reach 13 14 think its just a case of little kids all ways having closer contact at play ect
Put her into the tub and pour a 2 liter Pepsi or Dr. Pepper on her head it will help losen the nits. Leave it on her head for about 10mins. While in the tub run a comb through her hair. Then rinse. When she gets out of the tub you will have to comb some more. You might even need to try dog shampoo ( I know that sounds weird).
Have u try mixing Conditoner and tee-tree old togther and applying it to the hair leaving it on for about 5mins then combing it through try doing this about 3times aweek
Well if you have girls its kinda hard to check all over but as kids my mom kept our hair cut very short all though school. That way she could check at night when we came home. Another thing is the cleaner you head and hair are the more likely you are to get them is what I was told. But who wants to walk around with a dirty head. My grandmothers remedy was vinegar, so good luck with everything.
I don’t know if it will work for lice but pine sol kills fleas … it has to the name brand that has pine oil in the ingredients…. also put all of the kids stuffed animal and things like that in a black garbage bag and store them away for about 30 days.. that will kill them off from those type of things.. GOOD LUCK..
You may need to treat their heads again in 7 days. Just combing them out will not insure their demise. They hatch again in 7-10 days. RID is the best thing to use although it is not chemical free. Using the bedding spray was very smart. Mayonnaise is the best "home remedy" and is used as an alternative to chemical products, mostly for children or adults with allergies to ragweed. There really is no product to use to keep "from" getting them but not sharing combs, brushes, hats, or clothes with other children will help. Spending the night with other children and sharing the same bedding is the best way to make sure you DO get them. If your children have stuffed animals they have consistent contact with, make sure you enclose them in a sealed bag for a few days. This problem can be VERY expensive and frustrating yes, and in some cases hard to get rid of if you don’t take the proper measures. Good luck.
I’m a teacher and I’ve also worked daycare so I know all about lice. There really isn’t any good home remedy that’s fail safe. I’d recommend the Rid shampoo products because they also keep kids immune from getting it again for 14 days The bedding spray isn’t going to be enough, you’ll have to wash the sheets in hot water Put all of the kids’ stuffed animals and anything else plush in garbage bags tightly sealed for a month. Make sure to vacuum your carpets well and I’d recommend shampooing it. Lice are annoyingly persistant but it sounds like you’re on the right track. Best wishes!
I used Nix and Rid and they did NOT work. Of course, I washed all the bedding too. Did you spray your car also? Get the LiceMeister lice comb. It is found at Walgreens. I used rubbing alcohol on our heads to kill the adult lice and the comb to remove the nits.
this is emparising but when i was a kid rid did not work on us so my mother used mayonase. put it thick in there hair and leave in for 6 hrs. a long time but it will kill even the toughest of lice. f-y-i lice adapts to any phamisutical shampoo’s and mayo does not poison them it sufficates them.
