Anyone have any home remedies for getting rid of head lice?
My children were exposed to head lice around 4th of July and i have been checking them aleast 2 times a day since I found out. Well any when checking my daughter last night I found lice eggs. So I ran to wal-Mart and bought bedding spray, and a product called licefreee! a homepathic Pediculicid it is pharmacist recommend kills lice and the eggs and most important is free from potentially harmful pesticides and is safe for repeated applications.(Non-toxic). I am washing everything in hot water and drying it at a hot temp. also I sprayed everything with the bedding spray. I’m sure that I’ve done a very good job and I also made sure my children didn’t have anymore eggs/nits or bugs i comb it w/a nit comb throughly. I’m just needing serious suggestion on any home remedies that you might of heard that worked or tried yourself in case they ever return. also if you have any suggestions on how/or what to use to keep from getting them. Thanks alot ahead of time. This is very frustrating

SET THEIR HAIR ON FIRE!!!
Lice do not like tea tree oil. Try paul mitchell tea tree shampoo and conditioner. You could also try adding a few drops of rosemary oil into your shampoo and conditioner, but I think tea tree works better. I think you have done everything that you can. I know how frustrating it can be, but it should be over.
Try to put mediker shampoo. It worked for me
get a comb and some lice shampoo stuff and put any stuff that could be exposed to lice, out in a plastic bag and let it sit for a while so any lice on it will die, and be sure to keep checkin everybody carefully–i was exposed to lice in 2nd grade, but my mom didnt realize that i had them until she saw me scratchin my head aalot, and they had already hatched, my blonde hair made it basically impossible to see the eggs
good luck!!
I know this is going to sound absurd, and I promise I am not being a smart a$$. When we were little my grandmother would give us a buzz hair cut ( even the girls ) and then treat our scalps with kerosoene. Before you ask, YES it burns like HE!! and there aint nothing fun about it, but it worked.
Try vinegar and a proper head lice comb.
20 years ago, it worked for me.
Don’t forget to wash out the vinegar smell!!
I recommend cutting their hair to make it easier to comb out the eggs. You can use mayonnaise and vaseline overnight while wearing a shower cap.

Head Lice Home Remedies
If you don’t want to use a chemical on your child’s head, the most effective treatment that doesn’t involve using any products at all simply involves removing the nits and live lice with a lice comb and/or tweezers. This is the method that is advocated by The National Pediculosis Association. It can be time consuming to do this and you may have to repeat the procedure for several days to make sure you get them all, but this is likely the best thing to do. You still have to take the time to comb out all of the nits anyway even if you use an anti-lice shampoo, as these shampoos don’t kill the eggs. If you don’t, they will just hatch and you will have live lice again.
Most other natural home remedies involve putting something on your child’s scalp and hair to ‘smother’ the head lice. Popular choices include real mayonnaise, olive oil, and vaseline. These are usually left on overnight, often under a shower cap, and then washed out the next day. They can be very messy though and have not really been proven to work. Some experts believe that this method ‘works’ because you actually remove the nits and lice as you try to get this stuff out of the child’s hair.
There are also herbal remedies to treat head lice, including products with tea tree oil and other essential oils. Because they are ‘natural,’ these are not regulated by the FDA, have not been proven to work, and should be used with caution and avoided in younger children.
Dog Shampoo
You shouldn’t use dog shampoo on your child! Some of the active ingedients in dog shampoo, like pyrethrins, are also the main ingredient in Rid and other anti-lice shampoos. And other dog shampoos contain permethrin, like Nix. Plus there are dog shampoos with essential oils.
Although they have some similar ingredients, you still shouldn’t use a shampoo that is produced for your dog on your child…
I hear you..
My daughter had it for a while and it’s hard to get rid of it.
Try NIX.
You can also buy tea tree oil.
I wash my daughters hair once a week with it.
Lice don’t like it and stay off her head. It’s also not harmful to her or her scalp.
As for home remedies…
Mayonnaise….I know it sounds crazy…
Cake some mayo on her head and cover with a plastic bag.
Let sit.
My friend did this and it seemed to kill any living lice.
I’m not sure about the eggs.
But when you have a serious infestation I would try anything.
Remind your children NOT to share hats or type of head wear. ie helmets.
OMG! I cannot believe the recommendations from some people! Do NOT use vaseline. Takes forever to remove from the hair. Mayonnaise is not recommended either due to high risk of salmonella poisoning.
No need for pesticides and don’t waste any more money on pesticide sprays for the house. All you are doing is adding more toxins to your environment and it does nothing.
The best remedy is just plain old olive oil. Just saturate the hair and wrap in a towel or shower cap. This must be left on overnight to be effective. Just by leaving it on for an hour or two is not going to work. These little critters can shut their systems down for over 2 hours and still survive. NOTE: do not use this method if a pesticide like Nix etc. has been used within the last 7 days.
I cannot stress enough to invest in a good metal lice comb. The best on the market is the Louse Trap comb sold in Canada or the Nit Free Terminator comb. When dealing with lice, there is nothing on the market that actually kills the eggs, they must be manually removed. After the olive oil treatment do a really good combing. Repeat combing every 2nd day for two weeks and repeat olive oil treatment every 4th day for two weeks.
No need to wash everything, it’s the heat from the dryer that will eliminate the lice. Just place items in the dryer on high heat for 30 minutes and vacuum thoroughly, including the sofa’s and car/carseats for the kiddies. Items that cannot be placed in the dryer or vacuumed, no need to bag, just put them aside for 48 hours. Lice cannot live without a blood meal for more than 48 hours.
Also Mom, have someone reliable to check you. In most cases it’s the Mom that has lice too and keeps passing them back to the kids.
You must make sure all the eggs are removed, so comb, comb and comb. Just by missing a few can keep this infestation on going.
